Synopsis
This is not so much a biography musical as a musical using all the hallmarks of a Ziegfeld revue - colourful costumes, beautiful girls, spectacular scenery and a melodious score from musical numbers by masters of the genre.
Universally panned by the critics from such comments as:
- "Deadly. a depressing hymn to meaningless expenditure" - City Limits
- "Ziegfeld is intended as a tribute to Florenz Ziegfeld. If producers came to praise him, however, all they have done is bury his reputation." - Spectator
to
- "See Ziegfeld for its sheer spectacle. But don't expect high drama; it's got as much substance as candy floss" - Today
