The Scene is Paris at dawn, and the figures who first appear are symbolic of the early workers, relieved by a tragic silhouette of Harlequin returned to his garret. There enters a young baker, bearing on his shoulders a child. The Scene is next occupied by a rich woman coming home from a ball. She and the young baker are mutually attracted. But between them is a perpetual barrier, represented by a semi-transparent wall, on either side of which men vainly beckon. We may call this curtain Fate, Chance, Reality, as we still its significance is the same the symbol of thwarted desire. Finally the wall descends completely, shutting out both man and woman from all hope of romance. Scene 27.
