It is the evening of the betrothal festival, & she is taking a tender farewell of her young lover (Robert Naylor.) The Guests arrive, and she is duly presented to her unwelcome suitor (Ivor McLaren). Her pleas are unavailing. The Doge offers her the choice of her lover's freedom if she consents, or, his death if she refuses.
